I would absolutely love to hear that second pronunciation some day. In fact, I wonder if I could bring myself to say it that was a joke for a reaction (like calling myself a Trakkie in front of a Star Trak fan).
Ben, back in the late 80's/early 90's, it was a "thing"- I actually started hearing a lot of people saying ROAM-ee-OH. Funny too, now-a-days, they often seem to change the spelling of transliterated words and names too! Like, it used to be "Mao Tse Tung"...now it's "Mao Zedong"; "Quorran" is now "Koran", and apparently "Bruce" is now pronounced "Caitlyn".....
And of course, FIAT is pronounced Fix It Again, Tony!"
Here in the UK we usually pronounce it "Roe-may-oh". Well I do. My brother owned one of these until the brakes failed at 80mph. Lovely car and a real head turner, but pretty unorthodox in layout and not the most reliable. The engine is mounted angled and the gearbox and clutch are on the back axle. All that means it's a nightmare to work on, because nothing's where you can get at it easily. Oh yes, and the dreaded Italian tinworm.
As an aside to Sneaky Pete's comment. The view over here is that Lotus stands for "Lot's Of Trouble, Usually Serious."

Is it "Roe-MAY-oh" or "Romeo" as in Romeo And Juliet? I've heard it both ways- never knew which was correct.
