I've always abhorred these little rolling death-traps, but the one thing I loved about them, was their simplicity! Really, these things were testaments to how simply a car could be made. A basic engine, unencumbered with all the crud one finds on modern cars; a basic manual transmission- No computers, nor scads of electronics. Simple to fix on the rare occasion that something would go wrong. These cars could have lasted forever if they had had more substantial bodies and real frames. But alas, they'd fall apart and get consumed by rust long before the mechanical components would even come close to wearing out.
Modern cars with all of their fancy technology can't even come close to getting the gas mileage that these simple cars got. Many of 'em got as good or better mileage than a "Smart Car", but could comfortably carry 4 people and cargo!
I guess you could say that I have a love-hate thing going on with these things! Loved the mechnaics of 'em; hated the small cheesy tinny bodies!
