I am one year younger than that Oldsmobile… All I can say is I remember when these cars were about 10 years old in the late 70s.... I'd say about 95% of them were beaten up along with rust at that point.. In my opinion between 1981–84 was probably the turning point when these cars started disappearing, at least here in NY/NJ...… I remember seeing these gold colored cars as a kid & I thought they were very ugly. Kind of like those Chrysler olive greens from that era... All I can say is I appreciate that car and I wish they still made them like they used to. Pillarless hardtops rule!!!! I just don't understand why American car companies don't offer them anymore.. I can't say it's all the government because they still make convertibles.....
My first car was one of these. Bought it used in 1973 for $600.00. It had a light green body with a dark green top. Lots of good memories were made in that car (sigh). It was a nice car for a 16 year old kid!

I too can remember when these cars were everywhere. In those days (late 70s, early 80's) looking for a used car was actually fun because the lots were filled with interesting cars. Hardtops (2 and 4 door), woody wagons, the occasional convertible, most with V8 engines AM radios and room for 7 or 8 people on those big old bench seats. Still have some old Auto Traders from back then....want a 1969 Chrysler New Yorker with a 440 V8 and 63k miles? Three hundred bucks and it's yours. Gone are the days.
Agreed 100% with Richard's post about the demise of hardtops.....why cant we have them anymore? Probably has to do with money. I remember when the 1979 GM E-cars (Eldorado, Toronado, Riviera) came out, how they didn't have a center post and how cool that was. Went t0o the dealer to have a look and sure enough- sealed rear windows. On a top of the line luxury coupe! That's when I knew we were in for a rough rise....
Trivia: "Cutlass S" is the only phrase in the English language with three S's in a row. Can anyone think of another??

If you want a pillarless hardtop 2dr go to your nearest MB dealer and order an E-Class.
