Nice find! Love the faded paint and patina on this one. It's aged to perfec- tion right down to the coat hanger radio antenna. Not much rust to speak of either. Just a nice daily driver that held its age well.
It's been longer for me Don. The first one of these I'd ever seen was a 411 4-door sedan forty years ago. I thought that car was the goofiest thing I'd ever seen on four tires! Not really sure what the folks at VW were thinking when they came up with this one, but they blew it. They took a beautiful concept like the squareback and ruined it. Add to that awful styling a whole host of mechanical problems like malfunctioning fuel injection, slipping trannies, and electrical problems, and the folks at Wolfsberg found out they had a real loser on their hands. This model cost VW many diehard fans in the '70's, as the public was turned off by this car after the press got wind of all those problems. It makes me wonder how the owner keeps this thing running! However he does it, he has an excellent OPC.
Somebody get more oxygen in those tires, stat! Wheels are turning blue.
The old man in me is showing. I hate goofy colored wheels. Purple deep dish mags on Miatas, florescent green snowflakes on BMWs, now baby blue panaofsorts on vintage VW. Ugh. When did we start letting 8 year olds drive?
i freaking love the wheels, but not in a keep-it-stock OPC way. just a tasteful customization that i think looks great and shows, by contrast, that the owner totally appreciates the amazing patina. i'll bet folks either love it or hate it, which is a sign that you're doing something right.
Cool old wagon. It's funny to listen to people describe these cars-VW enthusiasts describe the engine as a "Porsche" engine (a similar one was used in the van), and The Porsche 914 used a similar engine, described as the "Volkswagen" engine. Years ago I robbed the rocker arms off of one of these to repair a 914.
