I used to see a few of these running around in my hometown of Bloomington, Illinois. They looked like nothing else we'd ever seen before. And while they were very attractive, Studebaker shouldn't have spent badly needed funds on cars such as the Hawks or Avantis. Instead, they should've spent the funds to retool their family car lines and then developed these cars after the company was back on sound financial footing. I had a chance to see some of their pro- posed family car designs, and they were quite exciting and attractive. Egbert should've fol- lowed his instincts on this one. If he had, we might've seen the company survive longer than it did. BTW, a very nice example indeed!
I wondered if Studebaker would still be around if they would have decided to focus on Vehicles that were 4X4/all wheel drive. Dedicating their interest on the market for people that lived in areas where there was a lot of snow like the states of MN,NY,exc. making cars great for those areas. Or on the other half concentrate on cars that have extremely good gas mileage for very rural/desert areas like the south west, I really wonder if they would have left the mainstream auto competition & concentrated on the above would've resulted in saving this car company.
It was the unions along with managment that killed Studebaker, Richard. The unions kept asking for more and more money for the workers and the company simply couldn't afford it. Had the unions and the workers given some concessions to the company, the situation might've ended differently. And managment, they contributed to Studebaker's demise by choosing to build exotic cars like Hawks and Avantis instead of more prac- tical family cars which might have saved the company. Had they done this, we might have seen those clean impressive designs by Brooks Stevens. I think they could've done it even from Canada, but the money was all gone and the wolves were at the door. Many things together helped kill Studebaker. These were just a few of them.
