That older gentleman probably woke up that morning thinking his day would be similar to the last not knowing that Ben would ask to take pictures of his old car.
@Grumpy Cat: The 1900 Sport Wagon was officially imported to the US and sold through Buick-Opel dealers from 1971 through 1975 (the last year for German Opels in the US market).
Like Spiff said they were imported. Car and Driver did an infamous review (more of a slam) on them in 1968, publishing photos of it in a junkyard. GM pulled all their ads. Read more about it here:
shame to see it in such hopeless circumstances, but i'd be far more surprised to see it in less hopeless circumstances.
these german gm's, like british fords, really do have a transcontinental appeal, although that's probably overstating it. i just think every one i've ever seen was the most appealing thing in the world. this one, too.
of course, the ecosystem taking hold of that glass and metal is remarkable in its own right, although that's probably understating it. you could dip this thing in a vat of boiling water and make vegetable soup.
kinda hopin' you documented those hubcaps, which must be the only intact set on earth.
Got any better pics of the 1983 Escort? I think it's a 1983 model anyway, there's so much filth on the side window that I can't tell for sure which dash it has.

These are really rare! They were never officially imported to the US! Its a good looking little car, with great patina.

Ascona, fancy meeting you here!
A. Damn. Shame.
Cool car, deserves better.
Holy moldy. Will this take the 2014 'My car is more alive than your shitty house plant' award? Only time will tell.

Paul didn't think it was funny, but I love it...no journalist has balls like the C&D writers did back in the day.
Shame to see such a rarity sitting with it's own ecosystem on it.

@Spiff and @Caroli: Thanks for the help!
Would like to find out where this car is. Looking for something to work on. Pleas let me know if you have a location.
