Even retrofitting that engine to low engine bay Vanagon has, would be a major task. Straight four (diesel) it has but it's in 50 degree angle, almost sideways.
Oettinger made a flat-6 engined versions of Vanagon, but that engine was from a Porsche.
Electric companies use these for line maintenance, syncro vanagon runs very well also off road, it's not just looks. :)
and this is called a Doka, they are more prevalent in S.Africa and Europe even though quite a few of them have been imported...seems most of them are on the West Coast..you can shove a Porsche Carrera/Boxster engine as well as a Subaru WRX/ Tribeca flat 6 in these...(Vanagon/Doka/Transporter)..and a VR6 will fit..it's just a bitch to do..the older Buses can also take Porsche/Subaru engines as well...I've seen Buick V6's as well as an '86 GTI 16v. working for a '71 Westfalia in my hood...
