Base engine for the Omni and the Plymouth Horizon was the 1.7L inline four found in the VW Sciroccos and Rabbits
I had a 1988 Dodge Omni with the 2.2L engine. Regularly got over 40mpg on the highway and drove 178k miles without any mechanical problems (save the rotor shaft, water pump, and alternator).
